Terrible puns aside, Darnley returned to fieldwork last week with a socially distanced and eagerly anticipated return to surveying in the beautiful Darent Valley between Shoreham and Eynsford. A project that had been scheduled for early February, been delayed due to field water-logging and then by the pandemic was finally carried out amidst waist high nettles and roller-coaster turf. Thank goodness we had the cool waters of the River Darent to dip our feet in at the end of the day.
We were analysing the land surrounding a previous Roman villa excavation, geophysical survey is a great way of expanding on an area that has been investigated previously without causing any damage. We’re hoping to expand the survey onto adjacent land and detect any other built features associated with the main villa.
We have the Darent Valley Landscape Partnership Scheme to thank for the opportunity and look forward to when we can welcome some trusty volunteers to help out.
