Explosive commission for Darnley
Updated: Dec 9, 2020
Darnley have produced a level 1 survey of a much heard of but little known site of industrial history in Dartford, the former Gunpowder Mill.
Read the full preliminary survey report here Powder Mill Lane is a well-known street in south Dartford and many residents know the name originates from a powder mill previously on the site. What is less well-known is that much of the mill's workings still survive on the site and can be seen from the Darent Valley Path section that runs along the east bank of the River Darent between Dartford and Hawley.
Darnley were commissioned by the Darent Valley Landscape Partnership Scheme to produce a preliminary survey of the site with a view to possible further community engagement to clear and maybe even excavate the site. The site is particularly interesting to director of Darnley, Fred, as he was born and raised in Dartford and remembers the site from his childhood.
Due to Coronavirus, the project has been put o hold but we're hoping to get back there in 2021 to uncover the rest of the site to the east of the path. Many thanks to Dr Anne Sassin for asking for Darnley's help in this important project and let's hope this heritage asset can regain it's rightful status.
